Re: [MFP] ?'s Re: U.S.-based Group Loans for Immigrants

Hi Madi,

I would also recommend checking with Connie Evans at AEO (https://www.aeoworks.org/about/staff).

Good luck,

Colleagues,

I've been asked to advise a group starting a group-based loan program to help low-income people living in my city in the U.S. secure legal status. I would tremendously appreciate:

- information on group-based loan programs in the U.S. focused on immigrants,

- sample bylaws for such programs,

- links to videos of how autonomous or semi-autonomous lending and savings groups work. (These are to help the advisory group for the program understand a bottom-up approach.)

Thanks so much for any information that you might share.

Best wishes,

Madi Hirschland

Hi Madi,

Let me add a few more names to the very appropriate leads that Sean sent you.

Nancy Jordan heard about savings groups a couple of years ago and started one, which grew into five in the second year. Jordan Bailey of Philanthropiece and I were just speaking today of their intention of starting US based groups. And, Eric Kinman and Solidarity Foundation have been forming groups in the US for several years.

I have copied Eric, Nancy and Jordan on this mail.

Also, you might want to check out www.StartYourSavingsGroup.com, a site I put together to encourage and facilitate peer-to-peer group formation, primarily in the US. Nancy and I presented on her work and on the ideas on that site, at the Savings Group conference earlier this year in Kigali.

Good luck!
Paul

Hi Madi,

Have you looked into Mission Assets Fund (MAF)? They may be a good organization to connect with: https://missionassetfund.org/lending-circles

And, of course, Jeff Ashe is doing fascinating work on diaspora savings groups in the U.S.
