[MFP] EDM journal edition on microinsurance

The March 2014 edition of Enterprise Development and Microfinance in now online at http://developmentbookshelf.com/content/x30338255v72/. It deals with the theme of Microinsurance (see contents list below) and is guest edited by Véronique Faber and Michal Matul. Microinsurance has come a long way; it is reaching more poor people and it is providing protection against shocks and vulnerability. However, there is still much innovation needed to develop appropriate products at the same time as covering business costs.

[MFP] Fireside chat with Ben Powell, the Founder and CEO of Agora Partnerships, on April 7th in Washington, DC

If you are interested in economic development, impact investing, and entrepreneurship as a way to poverty alleviation - this event organized by DC Microfinance Meetup may be of interest. You can RSVP for this free event here. Please see full description below.

"Join a community of like-minded people for a complimentary after work happy hour to discuss current and future trends in financial inclusion and impact entrepreneurship.

Our next speaker is Ben Powell - the Founder and CEO of Agora Partnerships.

Ben started as a co-founder of a small family entertainment park in Mexico, where he became convinced that the power of entrepreneurship can lift people out of poverty.

"A former presidential fellow with master's degrees from Columbia Business School and Georgetown's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, Powell founded Agora Partnerships to meet the needs of the "missing middle," companies that are too large for microfinance lending but too small for traditional banks." - DevEx

DevEx recently named Ben one of the top 40 under 40 development leaders in Washington, DC.

Katie Torrington, Senior Manager of Special Projects at FINCA International, will be moderating the discussion.

Ms. Torrington leads critical new business projects with an emphasis on introducing non-financial services. She also oversees FINCA's client protection work and is an active member of the Social Performance Task Force, which ensures high standards of customer service and transparency in the microfinance industry. Ms. Torrington serves on the Board of Directors for Women Advancing Microfinance International and formerly facilitated the SEEP Network Social Performance Working Group. Prior to FINCA, she worked for The Caribbean Project on microenterprise development. Ms. Torrington holds a Masters degree in International Development from American University.

Special thanks to our hosts at the 1776 startup incubator for providing their venue in the heart of downtown DC."

Thank you!
Vera

[MFP] Microfinance Master's Program, October - May in Madrid

Dear Microfinance Practice Members,

It's a pleasure to announce that registration is open for the microfinance training program in English at Universidad Autonóma de Madrid, now in its 6th year.

Over the 7 months of classroom training in a seminar environment, students interact with top-level guest faculty from all sectors of the microfinance universe: investor institutions, MFI executives and founders, donor organizations, microfinance research and advocacy institutions, and academics.

The curriculum provides students with a strong background in the fundamentals of microfinance - financial performance and sustainability, poverty measurement, social performance, rating MFIs, due diligence, and the how-tos of implementing community based microfinance projects.

And for Latin American students, the Master in Microfinance's partnership with Fundación Carolina offers substantial scholarships and travel support to attend the program.

Please feel free to ask me any questions, as I am an alumna of the program.

Best regards,
Valerie Artese

We are delighted to present our special Annual Report 2013 featuring the results of the ILO's Microinsurance Innovation Facility during the past 6 years.

Microinsurance is coming of age. The million dollar question microinsurers, regulators, and governments continue to grapple with is: Can microinsurance be viable and provide client value?

The evidence presented in the report indicates: Yes it can.

Also, find out about the Facility's new 5-year Quality at Scale programme (2014-2018) that aims to reduce the vulnerability of an additional 100 million low-income persons.

The report is also available in French and Spanish.
