Re: [MFP] reporting standards

Hi Murray,

If your question is more related to the setting of reporting standards, then I would refer you to two reporting standard guidelines from SEEP and Microrate. There was a previous Excel-based reporting tool developed by SEEP called FRAME which gained a little traction in the industry but ultimately was more useful as a training tool rather than actually standardizing global reporting. Finally there is the MIX who has their set of MFI reporting standards, including an XBRL template. See the links below for further reading:

Re: [MFP] reporting standards

Hello Murray

One of the documents which you may consider is from CGAP i.e. disclosure guidelines for MFIs.

It primarily relates to the disclosures required to be made by MFI in its financial statements to provide donors and users of the report details about the portfolio and related areas. Hope this is helpful. Links are given below:

Re: [MFP] reporting standards

Dear Murray,

In my opinion the challenge here is not the "usefulness" or the wide spread usage of certain MIS indicators. Rather the quality of data that serve as a base of generating these performance indicators.
Once you are certain that your MIS de facto accurate and shows what happens inside the organization (on the field, inside the finance department, branches and headoffice, loan officers and new clients etc) then you can use the reports that most of us consider indicative of your/MFIs operation's performance.
Any responsible and accountable MFI management sets these indicators up in a way that it clearly reflects and measures the performance of the strategy (mission) that they have set out for the organization to achieve.

I know, it may not directly respond to your question, but having seen numerous MIS systems and underlying data sets, I dare to be somewhat bold on this.

Best Regards,

Anna

[MFP] Does your microfinance program improve newborn survival?

Dear colleagues,

In partnership with the MDG Health Alliance and Johnson & Johnson, FHI 360 is developing a new online map, The Newborn Survival Map (https://www.newbornsurvivalmap.org/) that aims to capture all programs with a total value of $US500,000 and above across 14 different sectors whose work greatly impacts newborn survival. The map will initially focus on 16 countries* where newborn deaths are concentrated.

Email Christina Blumel (cblumel[at]fhi360.org) with the name and email of a contact person in your organization who will be responsible for getting your microfinance program included on the map. Christina will guide your colleague through the necessary steps to an online form, which takes approximately 20 minutes to fill out.

Many thanks for your partnership as we enter the Sustainable Development Goal era where achievement of the ambitious new goals will require unprecedented levels of collaboration. Read the letter from Leith Greenslade (http://is.gd/ZpxuQ2) of the MDG Health Alliance inviting your organization to be part of this exciting initiative.

Sincerely,

Sabina Rogers

* India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, China, Ethiopia, Angola, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Kenya, Uganda, Afghanistan, Tanzania, Sudan, Sierra Leone, and Niger. Send in your program information by August 24th to be sure that you are included in the Newborn Survival Map.

[MFP] RE: Great new book out on the political economy of microfinance

Phil Mader has just out one of the very best books examining the increasingly frail global microfinance industry. His thesis starts from the observation that the microfinance movement is a key part of financialised capitalism, and that, in the name of poverty alleviation, it increasingly serves to connect investors, large private banks and billionaires with poor individuals and their families languishing at the so-called 'bottom of the pyramid'. But while microfinance advocates argue that this emerging structure holds out the promise to empower the poor and ameliorate their poverty situation, Mader argues instead that its main attribute is actually that it allows the key players in the financial sector to extract substantial resources from the poor in a new form of socially-validated market-driven dispossession. Coming just as the microfinance model has been awkwardly revealed by mainstream economists as having had little to no positive impact (see recent work by Karlan, Banerjee and Roodman), Mader's book deserves, and should get, a wide readership for carefully explaining why so many individuals and institutions in the financial and international development sectors are desperate for the failed microfinance model to continue to dominate the global policy response to poverty.

Dr Philip Mader is a research fellow at the Institute for Development Studies, UK, and before that he taught in Basel and studied in Sussex, Cambridge, Cologne, and Harvard. His doctoral thesis completed in 2013, and upon which his book is based, was written at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies, and it won the German Thesis Award (and Euro 30,000) and the Max Planck Society's Otto Hahn Medal.
