Dear Chuck,

Thanks again for running this – I think we all learnt a great deal from the debates and insights hosted on this valuable platform. Its closure pains me both because it marks the end of an era, but also because it illustrates how we have become so dependent on big tech – with little/no redress.

Thanks to all who participated on the group for making it, in its heyday, a center for information, discussion and opinion exchange.

And many thanks again to you, Chuck, for all the work you have done on and off the platform to make the MF "industry" better. May your goats be less fractious.

About the archives…. Yahoogroups started dying about a year ago. They removed all the archived messages at that time. They are no longer available on the website.

But I saved them as they came through… I have the 15,400 emails sitting in a few Outlook PST files (90%) and the other 10% in Apple MBOX files.. But getting those set up so they are accessible to others is more work than I care to take on. If you have a good idea on how to do that and are willing to be engaged in the process, send me an email. (I would have to do some cleaning of the files, because there are good number of emails in my MFP folders that were off-line to deal with issues like hot tempers posting messages that we felt violated our ground rules.)

Chuck -- thanks for this update. As a group owner, are you able to export the full group contents? There's a wealth of history in these exchanges, and it would be a shame to lose it. There's the question of finding the proper archive to host them, but before we can do that, we need to capture all that data.

Howard and I set up this email group on Yahoo on 1 May 2001, over 19 years ago. We have 2,656 members. In the past, there was a large amount of discussion on this group, but for various reasons, it currently has little activity.

I just got notice that Yahoo is closing down the email group service tomorrow. They gave not even a week's notice. As of tomorrow, your emails will be returned as unsinkable.

So this is it…. Any discussions will now have to take place on other services you've migrated to. I'm certainly not going to go to the effort of setting up a new group and managing memberships when there is so little activity on the current group.

It has certainly been an interesting (and tumultuous) 19 years. Lots of differing views on the changes that happened in so short a time. Discussions of those views will now need to take place in other venues.
