[MFP] RE: Just out 'Seduced and Betrayed: Exposing the Contemporary Microfinance Phenomenon'

Our new edited book 'Seduced and Betrayed: Exposing the Contemporary Microfinance Phenomenon' is just out with UNM Press. It arises from a National Science Foundation grant we received back in 2012 to run a 4-day seminar in Santa Fe, New Mexico, at the School for Advanced Research. The contributors include the original participants plus a few others who came on board later on to cover certain specific topics. The foreword was written by James K Galbraith, one of the USA's leading progressive economists. The book is a multi-discplinary effort and it critically addresses the whole microfinance phenomenon from a variety of anthropological, political economy, cultural, economic and developmental angles. Great contributions include chapters by Carla Freeman, Phil Mader, Maren Duvendack, Sonja Novkovic, Lamia Karim, Jessica Gordon Nembhard, Marcus Taylor and others. Kiva, Nick Kristof's work, the Grameen family of 'social businesses' and other contributions are exposed as much less than what they claim to be, and are more outright scams. It essentially concludes that the once celebrated microfinance phenomenon was really all about the politics and not the economics.
