[MFP] Business Planning with Microfin - Training Update

Colleagues,

I’m pleased to confirm two Microfin trainings for December 2016 and January 2017, and let you know of likely trainings in February, March, and April 2017.

Microfin training focuses on strategic planning as the basis for creating operational forecasts for program growth, revenue, and expenses.  Tradeoffs regarding interest rate policy, organic vs. exponential growth, and capital structure all will be discussed along with how they relate to operational decisions.  Participants will use a case study approach to learn the Microsoft Excel based tool, and will have a good feel for how to create their own projections when they leave the training.   This will be a very interactive learning process and participants will be encouraged to share experiences, feelings, and ideas regarding the state of the industry as well as successes and challenges currently facing the provision of credit and savings services to the unbanked.

Howard Brady, a seasoned microfinance consultant of 20 years, will teach the workshop.  Howard has been a Microfin an instructor with Chuck Waterfield, the original author of the software, since 2000.  In April 2016, Howard assumed the future development and maintenance of Microfin.  Howard's consultancies have helped increase the efficiency and effectiveness of MFIs worldwide, have helped organizations find solutions to delinquency issues, and have created appropriate internal audit and internal control environments.  Howard integrates his first hand experiences into his teaching to provide practical solutions to complex issues facing MFIs today.

December 12 – 16, 2016 will be a two-hour a day training via internet connection.  We will go over the basics of Microfin through a live demonstration of data entry and available features.  I am considering two time offerings of this training as follows:

06:00 - Seattle, USA  |  09:00 Washington DC, USA  |  14:00 London  |  17:00  Nairobi, Kenya         and/or

19:30* - Seattle, USA  |  06:30 Nairobi, Kenya  |  09:00 Hyderabad, India  |  11:30 Manila, Philippines

*Seattle start time will be Sunday night 11 December

Early booking discounts are available until November 28, 2016.  Additional details can be found at:

January 16-20, 2017 will be onsite training in Kathmandu, Nepal.  This will be the standard training from 9 am to 5 pm each day which will give delegates an opportunity to explore and experience Microfin for themselves.  Special discounts and rates exist for those in Nepal and India.  Although not required, bringing a Windows based laptop is encouraged.  Lunch and two coffee breaks will be provided each day.  Please read about and register for the course here:

I’m in conversations with organizations and individuals willing to help with logistics for courses in Ghana (February 2017) and Kenya (March 2017).  If these courses interest you, please write to me at: hbrady@mfiresources.org and I will be sure to put your names on lists to be the first informed when these courses are formally announced.

It does seem like a long time from now, but April  is a lovely month, usually, weather wise, in Washington DC.  So put on your calendar the week of April 24 – 28, 2017 for another opportunity to learn Microfin.  If there is sufficient demand, I will offer an advanced course May 1 – 3, 2017 (the following Monday – Wednesday) for those who just want advanced instruction or want to learn the basics the previous week and stick around for a few extra days.  For those considering attending from afar, please start the process of securing your visa early.  Lack of visas have prevented course participation in the past.

Thanks for your interest and I look forward to seeing you at a training course soon.
