Re: [MFP] BRAC featured in the Guardian

And, even more praise for BRAC (shall we make it the week of BRAC?)  in that they also have a legal aid programme, recognizing that the poor also frequently have legal problems they cannot afford to resolve; combined with significant problems accessing the courts on their own.  Courts in many places are notoriously unfriendly to the average citizen and have filing fees (as well as persons asking for bribes to ensure justice is done). In the US, usually considered a wealtlhy country, the American bar association did a survey finding that legal services are unavailable to about 88% of the population due to cost.

The Global Alliance for Legal Aid (GALA, which is my NGO) promotes legal aid and public interest advocacy in developing countries.

Unfortunately, access to legal services is often overlooked as an essential element of development.   Though, it  eventually made its way into the UN SDGs thanks to advocacy from groups like Namati which works on land rights as well as other access to justice issues.

Happy Monday All!

Thank you Jami, the BRAC TUP is a great programme, it's good that The Guardian is telling the world about it. And even better (and perhaps a bit unusual) that some major international donors are supporting it in spite of the fact that they had nothing to do with its original development. Malcolm
