Microfinance Practice: Re: [MFP] RE: Land grabbing in Cambodia via microcredit

Dear Milford,

Thank you for alerting us to this alarming practice. I work for a medium-sized Cambodian MFI; at least at my MFI this practice does not exist. I do not know about other Cambodian MFIs, though I doubt that this is being practiced extensively as your sources say.

Firstly, for there to be a lot of land to seize, NPL must be high, but PAR30 in the Cambodian microfinance sector has consistently been very low, not even reaching 1%, in the last five years. Secondly, seized landholdings need to be adjacent and their owners must be defaulting clients of the same MFI to allow bundling. Both conditions should make "debt farming" pretty rare.

On the other hand, the fact that you do not get answers from the leading MFIs with large landholdings does raise suspicion. If you do not get an answer from them directly, perhaps you could inquire with the shareholders of these MFIs instead? Most of them are international social investors and this is something they should (I hope) care about.
