Greetings Group!
The email below is from a friend of mine in Nepal. She is a former Central Banker with a new bank for poor women with about 8,000 members. She needs to get relief to the members asap.
Does anyone know of any emergency liquidity funds for MFIs in Nepal or can anyone connect Bindiya's organization with other relief efforts?
Thanks a million.
Best,
Jami Solli

Hi Jami
How are you ? Thank you very much Jami for your concern . Here we all are safe till today because still small shocks are coming frequently. Really it was surprising that we are alive. Thank god !
My laptop was at the 2nd floor of my house at Kathmandu and only after the fourth day of that terrible earthquake we entered inside our house and still we are very scared to go to the top floor . The ground floor rooms of my house were rented. Students from outside of the Ktm. valley were living there . Our study and bed rooms are at the first floor. and at the 2nd or the top floor, there are my kitchen, a big hall with dinning and sitting common room and Juna's bed room .
You know Jami, all the students living at the ground floor are gone at their houses to meet the families because all are scared of the post earthquake viral and other diseases that can be spread from the very affected area . The news says that near about one million people who were working and studying here have gone out from Kathmandu . However, it became good for us that we, Juna, my husband and me are living in one of the student's room at the ground floor.
We are very much scared and thinking that how we would go and live at the top floor ? Further, my house is cracked at several places and we are waiting the supervision team of experts that whether this house is OK or not for living but now they are very busy so we are staying here taking the risk.
The most heated areas of the quake are Kathmandu valley ( Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur which are very historic and beautiful cities in Nepal with so many world heritage and monuments ) along the districts of its periphery like Sindhupalchok, Dhading ( where our WOMI bank's head office and my village house lies and both of them are cracked badly ) Gorkha, Makawanpur, Chitawan , Nawalparasi etc. And, the bad luck for us is that all of these districts are working areas of the bank. Our bank's staffs who are able to come to office of the 13 branch offices of these heated area are trying to collect data of members and clients. Some of them are dead. Most of our members are now homeless. The government is still nervous and confusing where to go ? so our bank's members are still out of that govt. help. Most of the members (now they are 8000 ) and their family expecting some help from our side and even they are saying unable to pay the loan installments and deposit the monthly savings. It is very serious matter for any MF bank that, you know Jami , we are still not in the position to give any cash to any body because our capital base is very low and working with huge borrowings from big banks . Many people do not understand this truth. So much donations are coming from so many countries and organizations but only for Prime minister Relief fund and some for NGOs /INGOs . Another bad luck that we are with the high sounding word "Bank" and that's why nobody think a bank need any help. This situation indicates tough effects for the long run not only for a MF sector but for macro economic situation of the country also . However, some old established and recognized MF banks came from the NGO base are distributing relief materials also but the new ones like ours are unable to do so.
Jami, in this situation, could you please do some thing for the poor women of our bank ? like collecting small amounts from your friend's circle and coordination with some organisations . That would be very appreciated. If so, I will send our profiles with some pictures or can we display some where through your social net work ? if so I will say to my CEO to send all the things officially. But ,before that, we have to be sure about the right channel for getting any help.
Jami , mail is becoming long . So Thank you very much and give my Namaste to Tony.
With warm Regards'
Bindiya
