Dear colleagues
We have a regular debate in Enterprise Development and Microfinance journal called Crossfire, which takes place between two writers (about 1200 words each). I am arranging one for the March 2015 edition based on the following proposition:
‘The promise of big data for development is overstated since big data analytics, derived principally from mobile devices, can have a potentially negative impact on vulnerable populations.’
I am looking for someone to argue in support of this statement (i.e. having reservations about big data) -- and your arguments might include that people’s private data, derived from digital transactions, can be used to profile and exclude low income individuals in a certain risk group, preventing them from accessing critical financial services. Also that this private data is sold to companies without users fully understanding implications; users are then inundated with aggressive marketing techniques trying to take advantage
I think we already have someone to argue against the statement.
Crossfire works like this: two participants debate an issue summed up in a proposition, one broadly supporting the statement, one against. One participant states why they support the issue, the next one replies to suggest why the first argument is weak. The first participant then replies, the second one finishes off. Each participant has two exchanges, each about 600 words in length. There is no winner of the debate - or we leave that to readers to decide!
EDM is a peer-reviewed journal widely read by enterprise development and microfinance policymakers and practitioners around the world.
If you are interested in participating in Crossfire, please let me know by 20 October. We will need the debate to be written (i.e. two short contributions of about 600 words each) by 1 December.
Crossfire is popular with readers, and usually the combatants enjoy it too, so I hope you can help with this.
Kind regards
Clare Tawney
