MFP folks might just be interested in Hugh Sinclair's latest blog piece just out. It argues that Peru's microfinance sector might just be on the verge of an Andhra Pradesh-style meltdown. Given that Peru's microfinance sector is effectively the largest in the world by some considerable way, such an event would be by far the largest microfinance meltdown to date. Such an event would, he argues, be extremely destructive to the Peruvian economy and society. I guess serious spin-off damage would also be felt in neighbouring economies where the microfinance model is also big business, notably Ecuador and Bolivia. Investors in Colombia and Mexico - both countries also highly saturated with microfinance - would also likely begin to panic.
