Diversification of the WFWI 12 month curriculum with an expanded scope on economic empowerment
Background
Women for Women International works with socially excluded women in eight countries where war and conflict have devastated lives and communities. Each woman we serve has her own story–some of loved ones murdered, and others of physical and emotional trauma. Most have endured a struggle for survival.
Women who enroll in our one-year program learn job skills and receive business training so they can earn a living. They come to understand their rights and how to fight for those rights in their homes, their communities and their nations. They learn how to become leaders.
WfWI implements a 12 month program of life skills, rights, awareness, business and vocational skills training in 8 conflict and post conflict countries: Afghanistan, Bosnia, DRC, Iraq, Kosovo, Nigeria, Rwanda and South Sudan. Since its found in 1993, WfWI has served over 372,560 socially excluded and marginalized women and distributed more than $110m in cash stipends.
Objective of the Work
WfWI training and its components have evolved over the years; currently the core 12 month program comprises of both business and vocational training, complemented by numeracy training offered to those women who need it. Business training includes topic of business basic, entrepreneurship, planning ahead, selling, simplified bookkeeping and financing your business. The thematic areas of vocational training that follows are selected through market assessments and vary from region to region in attempts to match women interest, skills and existing market opportunities. Women are allowed to choose the vocational track they wish to pursue from the menu of options available in their community
WfWI recognize a growing importance of the business and entrepreneurship skills for the women and would like to review the current training program and its composition. Specifically, WfWI is considering removing the vocational training component from the 12 month program and replacing it with training focused on entrepreneurship, financial literacy, job readiness/employment, formal and informal financial inclusion, business/market analysis and broader financial management skills.
