The India scheme is unfortunately all too common. Followers of MicrofinancePractice might be interested in this blog series we did late last year on the connections between pyramid schemes (and similar scams) and financial inclusion: http://www.cgap.org/blog/scammed-pyramids-and-financial-inclusion-agenda
The authors (Louis DeKoker, Nicola Jentzsch and I) explored the evidence that lower-income people get aught up in these kinds of schemes, the various connections to financial inclusion, and the options (policy, consumer awareness, action by legitimate providers) to reduce their negative impacts.
Best wishes,
Kate
