Chief Executive - Microfinance in Somalia
An experienced senior manager is needed to establish and manage a new microfinance operation in Somalia. He or she should have a record of successful senior management in finance or banking, preferably in microfinance, with experience of designing and offering shariah-compliant savings and credit products, and should also be familiar with mobile banking and related information technology.
The position will be based in Hargeisa in Somaliland, and the person who is selected will be required to start and build the operation from the ground up, in collaboration with an existing finance and telecom business. He or she will have overall responsibility for selecting and managing IT and other system providers and consultants, for choosing and building the capacity of head office and field management and staff, and for developing the operation to agreed targets for scale, outreach and eventual profitability.
The business will aim to succeed on a 'double bottom line'; it will bring affordable, accessible and secure shariah-compliant financial services to urban and rural people who do not enjoy such services at present, and will also be expected in due course to cover its costs and make a modest profit.
The ideal candidate will probably have an MBA or similar qualification, will have several years' operational and management experience in a socially-oriented financial institution, and will be a fluent Somali speaker, either living now in Somalia or prepared to take up full-time residence there.
